Jurassic World: Rebirth - A Review by a Die Hard Jurassic Park Fan.

Hi, it's Isaac. Figured this was as good a place to put down my thoughts as anywhere else on the web about the new Jurassic film. Lots of you already know I've been a huge fan since i was 4 years old.

So, went and saw Jurassic World Rebirth today (opening day). I'm going to try to keep this brief and avoid spoilers as much as possible. For those who don't want to read all this: 7/10. Good film this obvious shortfalls.

Overall I enjoyed the movie. Some of the set up is a bit hand wavy, especially after the world building done by the last trilogy, but that's fine. We're back on an InGen island, there are dinosaurs, and a lab. Familiar territory.

The Dinosaurs themselves look great, and are significantly more menacing than the last few films. This movie had more named characters die than I can remember ever happening in a Jurassic film before. And they don't shy away from it., A couple of them are particularly brutal, especially when you realize they are still alive when they are being eaten. The made VERY clever use of the original soundtrack, couple key moments are bonified tear-jerkers. New score bits are unmemorable.

Characters are all likeable for different reasons, and despite what you might see in some of the other reviews out there, I think they spent plenty of time building them. The first 30 minutes of the film is nothing but this. So no idea what they are talking about. The dialogue is somewhat hit or miss, but the trailers made it seem much worse than it was. Honestly whomever they had make the trailers should be let go, the movie is much better and much more coherent than the trailers would lead you to believe. Pacing for the first 2/3rds of the film is pretty good. They build the characters, put them in danger, get the story going, and we see growth from the key players as they encounter very wild and free dinosaurs for the first time.

River raft scene was awesome, if a bit shorter than I expected. Also, no idea where people got that there are two Rex's in the film, there is not. But the one we get is fantastic. The final act is where things fall apart. I'll say what everyone has been saying, enough with the mutants, enough with the hybrids. (PS: SPOILER HERE, but yes, surprising no-one, they are "failed" hybrids). There's a version of this film where they replace the Mutodons with Raptors and the D-Rex with a T-Rex or something like that and it is immediately much better. The entire mutant arc feels completely shoe-horned in in an obvious studio interference situation. I'd hazard a guess that David Koepp wrote a screen play for this and they kept the first few bits and tossed whatever he had in mind for the ending in order to get some sort of shock factor with the mutants, but quite frankly the "real" dinosaurs are much more frightening than the mutants are. Honestly not sure how it is that Universal doesn't get that we just want Jurassic films with dinosaurs. And before you come for me, I KNOW THEY ARE ALREADY GENETICALLY ENGINEERED THEME PARK MONSTERS. I get it. But the hybrids and mutants are completely and utterly unnecessary at this point. You did it twice already. Once was good, second time so/so. This time is bad and worse, it's boring. Anyways if it were for the above single rant, I'd have given this film a solid 8.5/10. As is it's a fun Jurassic adventure, akin to Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory but geared to an older crowd. If you like the JP franchise, or even just the first one(s), you'll probably enjoy this. Side note before I go, anybody figure out what the deal with the title is? Like how it relates to the movie? Cuz I haven't a clue. Ok, back to music. BYYYYEEEEE
